The Masks of the Goddess

"If you find Me not within, you will never find Me.
For I have been with you from the Beginning."
I've always been fascinated with masks as sacred tools - as what Carl Jung called “vessels for the archetypal powers”. In 1999, after studying mask arts in Bali, I created 30 masks of Goddesses from spiritual traditions around the world for the 20th Annual SPIRAL DANCE in San Francisco. In 2000, I returned to Bali to extend the series with several collaborative works with Balinese mask artists. I wanted to offer my collection as contemporary "Temple Masks", making them available to those who wished to use them for dance, story and ritual devoted to the Divine Feminine. As I and colleagues used the masks, they filled with energy and collective story. It’s been my privilege to see the Collection used in such diverse communities as the New College of San Francisco , the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, the Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors in New York, Buka Creati Gallery in Bali, the Willits Community Center, the Matrilineage Symposium at the University of Syracuse, and Masks of Transformation Conference at the University of Southern Illinois; in collaboration with the Global Art Project, at the Kripalu Institute in Massachusetts, and in exhibit at the Muse Community Arts Center in Tucson. No artist could ask for more.
Here are some of those who have used the collection. Thank you, truly, for dancing the Goddess Home.
